Free Cataract Clinic with AMDA in Mullaitivu, Sri Lanka

From July 28 to August 2, 2013, invited by the Association of Medical Doctors in Asia (AMDA), TaiwanIHA dispatched eye surgeon Dr. Yu-Sheng Hu, nurse Yi-Chun Liu and coordinator Ting-Hsuan Chen to jointly offer free cataract surgeries at the Mullaitivu’s District General Hospital in northern Sri Lanka.
Intraocular lenses, eye drops and related medical supplies prepared for this mission were financed by the TaiwanIHA within the budget of US$ 10,000. A total of 190 patients were served in this mission within 3 days. In addition to these TaiwanIHA members and AMDA emergency relief director Mr. Veeravagu Nithiananthan, 3 eye surgeons, and 4 eye doctors from Nuwara Eliya of central Sri Lanka, Jaffna in the north and Trincomalee in the east also joined to provide services in the free clinic. Approximately 30 others including nurses, medical technicians, Sri Lankan army personnel, police, Vision 2020 Secretariat members from Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health, as well as local NPO Brahmakumari Yoga Center worked enthusiastically to support this free clinic mission and ensured the success of this activity. The free clinic was well received by local residents and officials. The public was grateful for TaiwanIHA and the participants of the mission.
